American actor Kellan Lutz stars in acclaimed drama Generation Kill, which can be seen on Channel 4 on Wednesday nights.

The 24-year-old from North Dakota came to fame with his role as Emmett in the first part of the popular Twilight vampire saga.

The sequel New Moon is released on November 20, and he will also be in the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street next year.

TELL U

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE HIT MOVIE TWILIGHT?

I was coming back from Africa, where I'd been doing a mini-series. I got the script for Twilight and I didn't know there was such a fanbase or following or that it was so popular. When I read it, I was like, 'This is actually a cool script'. I didn't know it was based on the book. It wasn't until I got the role and ended up going to Oregon to shoot it, I still didn't realise it was a book, so my friend Ashley [Greene, who plays Alice Cullen] told me.

THE TWILIGHT SEQUEL, NEW MOON, IS DUE FOR RELEASE IN NOVEMBER. HOW HAS YOUR CHARACTER EMMETT CHANGED BETWEEN FILMS?

I wish I could say he has changed. For me he's a blessing to play just because he's so happy and so loving. It's like an upward character development arc versus a character that a lot of actors would play where there's depression or anger. He's just a happy-go-lucky kid in a candy store most of the time. He's like a guy having to defend a piece of candy that someone's trying to steal from him. Most of the time he's not worried that a vampire is going to destroy him because he has this super strength ability. It's really nice to not worry as nothing can hurt you, so the only time he snaps into protective mode is when someone's hurting his family.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR MOST BIZARRE BIT OF FAN MAIL?

I actually recently received some female drawers [laughs]. They've been so amazing. Fans are great, especially when we go to these conventions and I receive a lot of candy and a lot of letters. It's crazy that someone would want to write me letters, especially the ones that draw pictures of me. I thought I was a great artist. It's like, 'Jeez, they're great!'.

YOU LOOK LIKE YOU COULD GIVE JASON STATHAM A RUN FOR HIS MONEY AS A NEW ACTION STAR. IS THAT SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE TO PURSUE?

I would like to do it. I don't want to just limit it to that. I want to show everything I'm ready to show. But I just love stunts and I love shooting guns and I've been boxing for a while, so that definitely all fits into the action world. I'd love to be a James Bond type or a Jason Bourne type like Matt Damon. It would be really fun for me.
