Snowdonia

Caernarfon

The coastal town of Caernarfon is massively dominated by Caernarfon Castle, with its nine polygonal towers and walls of colour-banded stone. This was one of a chain of fortresses erected by Edward I, whose son was born here in 1284; Caernarfon was then a royal residence and the seat of government for north Wales. In the Queen's Tower is the regimental museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, the oldest regiment in Wales.

You can still see surviving the lengths of 13th-century town walls within the quaint narrow streets of the town. On the east side of town are the remains of Segontium Roman Fort. Dating from AD78, this was an important military post for three centuries and there is a museum of finds. The Hole in the Wall and Palace Vaults have good-value food.
