Bakewell is the only town inside the Peak National Park. It's a civilised place once you get away from the traffic, and the famous Bakewell tarts are on sale (although they're always known here as Bakewell puddings and don't quite resemble the ones most of us are familiar with). The Old House Museum is an entertaining collection in a 16th-century house, and contains rural bygones, Victoriana and Edwardian costumes and toys. The church has an array of splendid memorials, including 16th-century ones to the Vernon and Manners family of Haddon Hall.
Take the A6 in the Buxton direction.
