Saddell Castle, Kintyre, Argyll and Bute
Described as a fayre pyle, and a stronge when it was built in 1508, Saddell Castle then fell into the hands of the Campbells who held it for nearly 400 years. It is a tower house with a battlemented wall-walk round the roof. Some rooms have panelling or decorated ceilings, others deep recesses in the thickness of the wall. The floor inside the front door is removable so that unwelcome visitors can fall straight into a pit below. The castle sits at the centre of Saddell Bay on the edge of the sandy beach.
