UK's healthiest holidays

Healthy holidays
Made a New Year's resolution to be more healthy? Make it more fun by combining it with a family holiday...

Walk the Isle of Wight

Tell your kids the family's off on a walking holiday and they might shrug. Tell them it's an adventure on a windswept island with towering limestone formations, 70 miles of rugged coastline and deserted beaches, and they might prick up their ears. Join trained, child-friendly tour leaders for dinosaur walks, family treasure hunts, ghost walks for the daring, duck-feeding for the more timid and not forgetting the fabulous Pirate Parade.

Cycle a Cumbrian valley

When it comes to Cumbria's natural wonders, the Lake District tends to hog the limelight. But there are beautiful, rolling landscapes to discover in the little-known Eden Valley, the county's hidden gem, near Penrith. From 1 March-31 October You can rent bikes (and easily attachable tag-a-longs or trailers for the littluns) from the Eden Valley Cycle Centre, with discounts for multi-day rentals. Simply hire the gear, buy a route guide for £1 and head off. The bike centre can recommend good local places to stay en route.

Swim the Inner Hebrides

Forget trains, planes and automobiles...with SwimTrek's unique tours you get from place to place by front crawl. On this five-night island-hopping trip, starting on wildly beautiful Islay and ending on the mainland at pretty Craobh Haven, it's common to find seals swimming beside you, and the Gulf Stream-warmed water is surprisingly mild. A small-group tour, it combines camping and hunting lodges, and is led by an experienced swimming guide and shadowed by an escort boat. You need to be at least 16 years old, but you don't need to be Michael Phelps - everyone can take it at their own pace. If that all seems a bit too much like hard work and paddling is more your thing, head for the nearest Haven holiday park and enjoy a more sedate break.

Canoe down the River Wye

The good thing about canoeing downstream is that, if you can't be bothered to paddle, you'll keep moving anyway. Hire a Canadian-style canoe for a week from Wye Valley Canoes at Glasbury, just over the Welsh border, and you're off. You get a big waterproof barrel for your camping gear, but there are fine B&Bs en route, too. Highlights of the beautiful Wye valley include the literary town of Hay-on-Wye, the glorious, rocky outcrop of Symonds Yat, and the haunting ruins of Tintern Abbey. Admire kingfishers and swans, and tip your cap to fishermen, on this get-away-from-it-all holiday.
