Iceland is a naturally magnificent place. Visit at the peak of summer and be dazzled by the midnight sun. Visit in the winter months and behold the spectacle that is Aurora Borealis.
There's never been a better time to visit than now with the exchange rate, so for those of you with a few days to spare, here are the highlights of Reykjavik and the surrounding area not to be missed.
Best to do around and outside of Reykjavik

Blue Lagoon
Mineral rich, the hot soothing waters of the Blue Lagoon will ease aches and pains and rejuvenate the soul. Smother yourself with volcanic mud and clear those pores. Hole up in the sauna to shift the toxins and then indulge in a fantastic water massage to enhance relaxation. You'll be provided with everything you need and prepare for your lagoon experience in the pristine changing areas.Golden circle tour
Take one of many coach tours to the golden circle visiting Gulfoss, one of Iceland's most magnificent waterfalls and Geysir, the original geyser where all the others got their names. Don't get too close to the Geysir as you won't get much notice before it blows a jet of water more than thirty feet high.Best things to do in Reykjavik

Go shopping!
Visit the Icelandic Design Centre - www.kraum.is, full of handicrafts, furniture and crockery for the home to name just a few of the products. Stunning wallets, bags and shoes are made from fish skin (supposedly as strong as leather) and warm weather wear is stylish and fitted to flatter.
Shops not to miss include:
Naked Ape - www.dontbenaked.com
Spaksmannsspjarir - www.spaksmannsspjarir.is
Steinunn - www.steinunn.com
Enjoy the music
Reykjavik is full of bold and talented musicians. The band scene is competitive, but also supportive of each other. You'll easily find gigs playing throughout the city (check out Organ for your first port of call) and you can buy all the local music at Tonar, Independent Icelandic record label and shop - www.12tonar.is. Visit the shop and relax on their comfy sofa with a cup of coffee and listen to your choice of CDs.
Bands to look out for:
FM Belfast - www.fmbelfast.com
Hjaltalin - www.myspace.com/hjaltalinband
Borko - http://www.myspace.com/borkoborko
Sprengjuhollin - www.myspace.com/sprengjuhollin
Visit a city spa
There are numerous city spas in Reykjavik that are just a taxi ride away. Our favourite was the Blue Lagoon City spa - www.hreyfing.is/. Gorgeous treatment rooms, heavenly outdoor sea water and fresh water pools combine to make your visit as blissed out as possible.Flights
Icelandair flies to Reykjavik from London Heathrow, Glasgow and Manchester with return prices from around £212 (incl. taxes). Book the best fare.
