Brading Roman Villa, Isle of Wight
In 1879, a farmer, digging in his field, struck a mosaic of Bacchus. The gentleman archaeologist Captain Thorpe was called in, and he uncovered one of Britain's finest Roman sites.
The big attraction of the villa which started as a small house in the first century AD, but was extended over the next 100 years into a rather flashy pad is the excellent mosaics. Five of the rooms have them, depicting Roman fables and characters.
The site is still only partly excavated, and a new dig is due to begin this year, so who knows what else they'll find?
