UK's best ruins
Tintern Abbey, Gwent, Wales
The Romantic poets loved a good old ruin, particularly if a wild landscape surrounded it, and Wordsworth put this long-forgotten, ivy-shrouded building on the tourist map with his poem, Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey.
It's certainly a beautiful place, by the river in the glorious Wye Valley, a hiker's paradise, and the abbey's immense open spaces have an awe-inspiring quality.
Mainly built in the 13th century, it was dissolved during the Reformation in 1536. The building is well cared for and parts of it are currently being restored. Take a pen and paper in case you feel poetical...
