Tintern Abbey, Gwent, Wales The Romantic poets loved a good old ruin, particularly if a wild landscape surrounded it, and Wordsworth put this long-forgotten, ivy-shrouded building on the tourist map with his poem, Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey. It's certainly a beautiful place, by the river in the glorious Wye Valley, a hiker's paradise, and the abbey's immense open spaces have an awe-inspiring quality. Mainly built in the 13th century, it was dissolved during the Reformation in 1536. The building is well cared for and parts of it are currently being restored.
