St Andrews Cathedral, St Andrews, Scotland Today, golfing pilgrims flock to St Andrews, the game's spiritual home. But in the early middle ages, 'proper' pilgrims flocked here to check out the relics of St Andrew. Once the largest church in Scotland, the cathedral was finished in 1318, and ransacked during the Reformation, in 1559 – first the altars and images were removed, and later, much of the stone was carted away. An iconic part of the complex is the 100-foot-high St Rule's Tower. Climb it for great views of town and sea. The grounds are free to enter, and there's an onsite museum. More info:
