Witley Court, Great Witley, Worcestershire In its day this huge Palladian palace, home to the Earl of Dudley, was one of Europe's grandest country piles. But then, tragedy struck – twice. In 1920, the second Earl's wife, Rachel, died from drowning. He sold the house soon afterward and in 1937, a fire ravaged it. When a salvage dealer bought Witley Court in 1954, he brutally stripped it of most things of value, but since 1984 it's been looked after by English Heritage. You can explore the ruins, admire evocative old photos, and stroll in the gardens, whose spectacular main fountain has been restored. More info:
