What's it like?
The UK's greatest city castle, no question. Standing atop an extinct volcano, it's an imperious icon with amazing views of the city and beyond. A guided or audio tour is essential to take in with the castle's long history.
What's the story?
It was built in the 12th century by David I (St Margaret's chapel still stands from that time) and switched between English and Scottish hands several times. Much of it was rebuilt after a 16th-century sacking, and when James IV of Scotland became James I of England, in 1603, the castle's royal glory days were over.
