What's it like?
It's one of Europe's greatest medieval castles. The eight massive towers rise from a narrow, rocky outcrop and its setting, with the mountains of Snowdonia in the background and the river Conwy's estuary on the other side, is magnificent. Wondrously, the town's medieval walls still exist, too.
What's the story?
It's one of the many Welsh castles built by the Wales-conquering Edward I to form his 'iron ring' around the country. It was begun in 1283 by his castle-building maestro, James of St George, and castle aficionados consider it a masterpiece.
