What's it like?
Mention it to a son or daughter of south Wales and they'll go all misty-eyed and it's certainly a stirring sight, occupying on a 30-acre island created by its water defences. One of Europe's biggest fortresses, it even has a leaning tower to rival Pisa's.
What's the story?
It was built in Norman times by Gilbert de Clare. The ghost of his missus, the Green Lady who dropped dead when he insensitively announced he had hanged her lover is said to haunt the ramparts. The castle was restored in the 19th century.
