Microsoft has a tendency to treat its customers like children, hiding features of its programs that might puzzle users, but the result is often confusion.Take file extensions for example: every file in Windows has an extension attached to it, usually just three letters such as .txt (for text) or .jpg (for digital pictures).Extensions uniquely identify every file, but Microsoft seems to think they are too difficult for ordinary users to grasp and deliberately hides them from view, with the result that it’s possible to have several files with apparently the same name stored in the same folder. This makes file management very tricky unless you know how to bring the extensions into view, as described in this Workshop. We also tell you how to handle 10 other situations where Microsoft does not necessarily know best.
