Sharing an internet connection using Wi-Fi is great, but why stop there? With just a little more effort, you can connect all the computers in your home with a wireless network. A home network is a bit like a mini-Internet that only you and your family have access to, and lets you do amazing things like:

  • Share files and folders - It doesn't matter which computer you use to download your holiday snaps from a digital camera, as all the networked computers can access the images at the touch of a mouse. Or play MP3 files from your desktop computer on your laptop wherever in the house you are.
  • Share printers and scanners - Any computer connected to the network can use any device connected to it. So whether you're sitting in the living room or wandering around the garden, you can print pages or scan images back in the office.
  • Multiplayer games - Many computer games now support "LAN mode", allowing anyone on the network to play directly against anyone else. Imagine relaxing by the fire with your Wi-Fi based laptop, playing chess with someone working in their bedroom upstairs.
  • Wireless networks have many advantages over traditional cabled networks. They're easier to install, with no messy cables to hide under tables or run through walls. They're also much more flexible, making it simple to move computers or devices around, or even to add extra computers later on.

To set up a wireless home network, you might need to buy some more equipment. If you're sharing your broadband internet connection, you'll already have a modem and wireless access point/router. Your laptop may already come with everything it needs to become part of a home network, but you will need to buy wireless network adaptors for other computers and any other devices you want to be part of the network (printers, scanners, etc.). You should also buy a cheap USB memory flash drive to help with setting it all up in the Windows Operating System of your choice.

The computer (usually a desktop PC) directly connected to the broadband modem and wireless router is known as the host computer. On this machine, go to the Start menu, then Accessories, Communication and Wireless Network Setup Wizard. Give your network a name and follow the instructions, using the USB flash drive to set up each device, one after the other.

To finish, you may need to enable file sharing and printer sharing on your host computer, which you can do using the Windows Help and Support Centre. Then sit back and enjoy the flexibility of working and playing anywhere you want around the house.
