Choosing a wireless laptop

Laptop (also called notebook) computers are no longer the poor relations of desktop PCs. Today's notebooks can do anything that desktops can plus, with the addition of Wi-Fi technology, a lot more besides. Notebooks have bright flat-panel LCD screens, full-size keyboards, all the connections you need to use for digital cameras, printers and other accessories, and often high speed DVD drives, too.

But if you're looking for a dedicated wireless laptop to make the most of Wi-Fi hotspots and home networks, there are a few extra features to watch out for:

  • Built-in Wi-Fi technology. Most notebooks have a slot for a separate Wi-Fi card, but you'll save yourself time, money and hassle if you buy a notebook with Wi-Fi equipment already installed.

  • Size and weight. It's no good having a super-powerful notebook computer if you can't lift it. You'll probably end up carrying your laptop further than you imagine, so shop around for the smallest, lightest model that has the capabilities you require.

  • The right Wi-Fi standards. Wi-Fi comes in several different flavours, and not all systems work with each other. The most commonly used right now - and essential to have if you plan to access public hotspots - are 802.11g, this gives speedy access to broadband internet connections at distances of up to 25 metres, and 802.11n which is faster still but has a slightly shorter effective range

  • Battery life.There's nothing more frustrating than having to finish web browsing or cut short an e-mail conversation because your computer is running out of power. Wi-Fi access does use a fair amount of energy so it's important to choose a computer that's designed with wireless working in mind.
