There's a lot of competition, but the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS certainly keeps up. It makes headway by keeping a compact size with a mighty 10x zoom lens. A full complement of manual and semimanual controls keep it in the running, and its superb photo quality pushes it towards the front of the pack

We Like: Full set of manual exposure controls; optical image stabilisation; electronic lens cover

We Don't Like: Too easy to accidentally click instead of scroll when navigating; no optical zoom in movie capture

Judgement: Though the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS produces excellent photos, other aspects of the camera -- some performance issues and operational annoyances, to name two -- dim its lustre
