Prevx launches free online safety tool

Banking and e-commerce firms could roll out software to customers

Security firm Prevx has launched a new security programme designed to help banking, government and e-commerce sites protect customers from web-based threats aimed at compromising account information.

Companies signing up to the Prevx SafeOnline Business Partner Programme will gain access to free reports detailing the types of threats targeting their sites, and free SafeOnline software which can be offered to customers to boost online safety and improve consumer confidence.

The software protects against phishing, man-in-the-browser and DNS poisoning attacks, and keystroke-logging Trojans, and includes real-time scanning functionality to alert users about potential risks, according to Prevx chief executive Mel Morris.

"We are always in a situation where the real threats to people are the ones that bypass their current security measures, so the approach behind this is let’s implement another layer of defence," he said.

"The banks are concerned about the direct costs associated with online fraud, but these costs pale into insignificance if your customers are too afraid to do online banking."

Morris said that the tool has been tested by vulnerability testing firm Immunity, and found to provide 100 per cent protection against some of the most prolific banking Trojans currently in the wild, including the Zeus, MBR, Goldun, and Silent Banker groups.
