Falcons target Naas Botha for coaching role

Reports from the Afrikaans newspaper Die Rapport has linked the former Bok fly-half to "an excellent offer" worth millions.

Botha has been reluctant to get his coaching feet wet, after offers from Jake White to join his Springbok machine and previous offers from other Unions.

Former Bok prop Guy Kebble is suggested to be one of those pushing for Botha’s application.

Kebble, who is himself a shareholder in the Falcons, may be bank-rolling the offer in part.

Falcons president Rautie Rautenbach was hesitant to reveal names, but did indicate to the newspaper that they were chasing a high-profile coach.

The names of former Boks Ray Mordt, Krynauw Otto and Uli Schmidt have been mentioned as members of Botha’s management team. Mordt, however, has apparently already indicated that he would not be available.

Botha has had success in previous coaching exploits, from managing the Springbok U-21’s to world cup glory in 2002, to helping Tuks in an advisory role.

The Boks legend has been focusing most of his attention to his role as a television personality and rugby annalyst.

Meanwhile, several of the country’s rugby agents have already been in contact with the Falcons. Up to 20 provincial players have indicated that they would like to play for the Falcons if Botha takes over as coach.

Botha’s response is expected within the next few days.
