ENGLAND 51 IRELAND 10

England unsurprisingly beat Ireland 51-10 at Twickenham to keep their hopes of another Grand Slam alive. The match was a curtain-raiser to the men’s international between the two sides. The England women did what their men could not do. Rosie Foley of Ireland did not have the success that brother Anthony had later in the afternoon.

It was the second time that England Women have played at Twickenham.

They led 27-5 at half-time.

As England scored eight tries, Nicky Crawford took her Test try tally to 50 in her 51st Test with a hat-trick against the Irish.

Afterwards Crawford said: "Some days you play out on the wing and the ball never comes to you, but some days it does.

"It was absolutely fantastic to score my 50th try. It was a great occasion, a great place to do it, and a great team to do it for."

SPAIN 6 SCOTLAND 5

This is a huge win for the battling Spanish women. Scotland stood second on the table and had given England a tough old time at Galashiels. The Spaniards had been struggling with a young, reconstructed team, but held on to win this low-scoring match at Estadio Manuel A. Cortizo in Lalín in Galicia, There were about 3,500 spectators for the match, more than many Celtic League matches attract. The field was in perfect condition, the day pleasantly sunny.

All the scoring happened in the second half after Spain had probably had the better of the first half. First Inés Etxeguibel kicked a penalty eight minutes into the second half. Five minutes later Scotland went ahead when Mary Pat Tierney scored a try. The fly-half took a quick pass at a penalty to score before the Spanish defence could sort itself out. But not long after that Etxeguibel kicked her second penalty goal and then the Spanish side stood firm till the whistle. The Spanish side did not only defend in this period but also mounted attacks.
