Wells, who has been promoted from the Tigers forwards coach, will be assisted by flanker Neil Back, who has relinquished the captaincy to former England skipper Martin Johnson, but he insists he is not ready for the step up in responsibility.
"I myself, at this time, have no wish to be in Dean’s shoes or fulfilling Dean’s role," Wells told leicestertigers.com, the club’s official website.
"I’ve been put in a position whereby I’m head coach and directly in charge of day-to-day affairs relating to the first team.
"That means issues such as planning training, selection, injuries and the behind-the-scenes medical and physio areas. They’re the sort of responsibilities that you’d expect of someone who’s one step away from being Director of Rugby."
While, Wells has no interest in the full-time job, Leicester are reportedly keen on former Springbok and current Stade Français coach Nick Mallett to take over the position.
Mallett’s contact with the French champions comes to an end in June and would be the ideal candidate to help the Tigers reclaim the type of form that saw them win back-to-back Heineken Cup titles as well as four consecutive Zurich Premiership trophies. Copyright Planet-Rugby.com |
