Sunderland have already received a series of inquiries about the vacant manager’s post just 48 hours after Mick McCarthy’s departure.
Former captain Kevin Ball was appointed on Monday as caretaker boss for the remaining 10 games of a disastrous Premiership campaign in which the Black Cats have won only two of their 28 games to date.
Chairman Bob Murray faces the task of recruiting a replacement for McCarthy who is prepared to work on a shoestring, but interested parties have already started to register their interest.
"Sunderland may have had a difficult and disappointing season, but it still has a proud heritage and is well regarded in football terms," chief executive Peter Walker told the club’s official website.
"The club has a strong fan-base and superb facilities for any would-be manager, and is an attractive management proposition.
"A number of people have already approached the club to register an interest in the position.
"However, Kevin Ball has been appointed caretaker manager until the end of the season, so the club will not be rushed into making any decision."
McCarthy’s departure after three years left Murray facing a fans’ backlash with some suggesting he should not have sacked the Yorkshireman and others that he left it too late.

The club’s parlous financial situation means the new manager, like McCarthy, will have to work under tight restraints with debts of around £40million still to be serviced.
Murray worked hard after Sunderland’s last relegation from the top flight to secure new arrangements with the banks as they moved to restructure that burden.
However, with the £20million life in the Premiership next season would have brought almost certainly lost and the parachute payments the club will receive for the next two years much smaller, McCarthy’s successor is likely to have minimal funds at his disposal.
Much of the early money went on outgoing Rangers boss Alex McLeish with Ball second favourite, but Wearside legend Niall Quinn has made significant strides in the betting since, shortening from 50-1 on Monday to 8-1.
