If you've bought goods by mail order, or purchased tickets over the phone, you will find shopping online is a breeze. You can browse by clicking on subject headings such as Books or CDs, or simply by typing what you're looking for into a search box.

Soon you will be looking at a selection of products, just as you might see on a shop shelf. The difference is that now you can look much deeper - behind the shelf and into the stock room to find exactly what you want.

Every product is described in some detail, and usually you can find out everything you might need to know about its size, colour, fabric and other qualities. If you need to know more, you can email the merchant. They should reply within one business day.

When you are satisfied that you have found what you want, you add the product to your shopping basket. You can check the contents of your basket by clicking on the basket icon, and this will keep the details of what you've chosen until you are ready to buy it.

When you are ready, have your credit or debit card to hand. You enter the transaction process, which is where you fill out your details and enter your credit or debit card number and expiry date. This final stage is called the checkout.

Remember that all shopping sites operate a privacy policy and you will not be solicited with unwanted emails if you check the opt-out box.

After you have clicked the 'Submit' or 'Buy It' box, you will receive an email that confirms your order within one business day.
