note: not all verbs take avere
(ho, hai,
etc.) as their auxiliary
verb, some verbs take essere
(sono,
sei, etc.). These are
mainly verbs of motion or staying:
andare-to go,
stare-to be (located at),
e.g.
sono andato
I went
sono stato a Roma
I was in Rome
When the auxiliary verb essere
is used, the past particple
(andato,
stato)
becomes an adjective and should agree
with the subject of the verb, e.g.
sono
andata
I went (female )
siamo
stati
we went (plural)
