Nouns: formation of plurals

For most nouns, the singular ending changes as follows:

masc. sing.

masc. plur.

note: nouns ending in e can be either masculine

or feminine. In the plural they all end in i , e.g.

la televisione

le televisioni

il mare

i mari

note: most nouns ending in co and go become chi and ghi in

the plural to keep the c and g hard sounding. Some

exceptions occur in the masculine, e.g. amico - amici

fem. sing. fem. plur. example

note: nouns ending in ca and ga become che and ghe in the
plural to keep the c and g hard sounding.
Nouns ending in cia and gia often becomes ce and ge to
keep the c and g soft sounding.
