Basic Grammar In Italian all nouns are either masculine or feminine. Where in English we say the apple and the book, in Italian it is la mela and il libro because mela is feminine and libro is masculine. The gender of nouns is shown in the article (il, la, un, una,etc.):
note: definite articles (il, la, i, le, etc.) used after the prepositions a (to, at), da (by, from), su (on), di (of, some) and in (in, into) contract as follows:
