In French there are two forms of you -
tu and
vous. Tu is
the familiar form which is used with people you know well (friends
and family). Vous, as well as being the
plural form for you, is also the polite form of addressing someone.
You should take care to use this form until the other person invites
you to use the more familiar tu.
Object pronouns are placed before the verb,
e.g.
il vous aime (he loves
you)
nous la connaissons (we know
her)
However, in commands or requests, object pronouns follow the verb,
e.g.
écoutez-le (listen to
him)
aidez-moi (help
me)
note: this does not apply to negative commands or requests,
e.g.
ne le faites pas (don't do
it)
The object pronouns shown above are also used to
mean to me, to us, etc. except:
le and
la become
lui (to him, to her)
les becomes
leur (to them),
e.g.
il le lui donne (he gives it
to him)
