An extremely common and widespread water snail, found in ponds, lakes and ditches throughout lowland Britain and Ireland; sometimes found in slightly brackish conditions. The shell is rather oval or rounded with the last whorl relatively large and expanded; it is pale brown but has darker blotches. The tentacles are broad, flattened and ear-like. Egg masses are long and gelatinous.
