An elongated bivalve mollusc, seen mostly when shell from dead animal is washed-up. In life, lives buried deep in sand around low-tide level on beaches; siphons reach surface of sand when immersed thus enabling animal to filter feed. Outer surface of shell valves olive-brown and flaky. Widespread and generally common.
