Arion ater
Length up to 12cm

Widespread and common throughout Britain and Ireland. Occurs in almost all terrestrial habitats. Body is uniform in colour but seen in two forms: orange-red form is commonest in S and in gardens while black form prevails in N and upland areas. When alarmed, contracts into an almost spherical ball and often rocks from side to side. Mucus colourless. Lays clusters of pale eggs under logs.
