A common and familiar bivalve mollusc. Found both on exposed rocky shores and attached to stones or posts in estuary mouths. Both shell valves identical; dark grey-brown on outer surface but with mother-of-pearl coating on inside. Forms large groups, each attached to rocks by tough threads. Common and widespread.
