A common bivalve mollusc which is found buried in mud and sand in estuaries and on expansive beaches. Shell valves are identical; grey-buff outer surface scored with radiating ridges and inner surface shiny and white. Widespread and often common around suitable coasts of Britain and Ireland. Often grown commercially.
