Length 20-25cm
Smaller than stoat with proportionately shorter tail which lacks that species' black tip. Highly active and relentless in pursuit of prey which comprise mainly small mammals. Favours a wide range of habitats wherever prey common and found in woodland, hedgerows and grassland. Common and widespread in mainland Britain although not always easy to see. Absent from Ireland and many islands.
