Body length 10cm

Largest British shrew with clearly defined dark upperparts and white underparts. Invariably seen near water and feeds on aquatic invertebrates. When swimming, looks silvery due to air trapped in fur. Seldom numerous but widespread in England, Wales and S Scotland; absent from Ireland.
