Introduced to this country from its native range in Asia in latter half of 19th century. Now established as feral populations in several locations; also seen as parkland deer in some parts of England. In winter, appears uniformly grey-brown in colour but, in summer, acquires reddish brown coat beautifully marked with white spots. Head appears narrow and pointed compared to other deer species. Female lacks antlers. Those of male are narrow and poorly branched; these are shed in April. Favours areas of woodland and farmland and found in isolated populations in England, Scotland and Ireland; small herd lives on Lundy.
