Short-tailed Vole Short-tailed Vole
Microtus agrestis
Body length 10-12cm

Similar to bank vole but with grey-brown fur and very short tail. Common in grassy habitats and can be seen by turning over sheets of wood or metal in grassland. Creates 'runs' along which it can sometimes be seen moving. Widespread in mainland Britain; absent from many islands and from Ireland.
