Minke Whale
Balaenoptera acutorostrata
Length 8-10m
Smallest of the baleen whales and the only one regularly seen in British coastal waters. Locally common in fish-rich seas off W coast of Scotland and around Ireland. Possibly overlooked elsewhere. Often seen in comparatively shallow waters and can sometimes be seen from land. Best views obtained from boats to which species is accustomed in some areas, notably off Mull in Scotland. At close range, diagnostic white spot on flippers can be seen in clear water. Seldom breaches but occasionally lunge-fishes at surface. Usually encountered singly or in groups of two or three. Head rather triangular in outline with ridge from snout to blowhole. Fin pronounced and curved. Tail not raised prior to diving. Blow is small and easily missed except on very calm days.
