Lesser Horseshoe Bat Lesser Horseshoe Bat

Wingspan 22-25cm

Distinguished from other British bat species, apart from greater horseshoe, by horseshoe-shaped 'nose leaves' (fleshy outgrowths from side of nose) and absence of tragus (pointed inner ear outgrowth). During summer months, uses caves and cellars for daytime roost. Active for much of the night in search of moths. Wingbeats fast and fluttering. In winter, hibernates deep in caves, sometimes in considerable numbers. Found in W England, Wales and W Ireland.
