Greater Horseshoe Bat Greater Horseshoe Bat
Rhinolophus ferrumequinum
Wingspan 34-39cm

Rare and endangered. Like its lesser relative, it has horseshoe-shaped 'nose leaves' and lacks the ear formation known as the tragus. Favours wooded terrain but roosts and hibernates in caves, cellars and abandoned mineshafts; in summer, found near entrance but in winter usually deeper where temperature even and constant and frosts cannot penetrate. Flies only when completely dark and has heavy, rather laboured wingbeats. Restricted to SW England and S Wales.
