Introduced from mainland Europe by Normans but now well established in many parts of Britain and Ireland except N Scotland. Kept as a parkland animal, becoming accustomed to man. Away from protection, often hunted and is wary and shy. Parkland animals often selected for pale, dappled coats but elsewhere animals with dark coats predominate. Prefers to live in medium-sized herds and favours wooded areas; sometimes on farmland in summer months. Young born in spring. Rut occurs in October accompanied by barking coughs of males. Male only has antlers which, in mature animals, have broad, flattened tips.
