Body length 12-15cm

Considerably larger than dormouse with greyish coat and relatively long, bushy tail. In Roman times, reared and fattened to be eaten. Introduced into Britain to Hertfordshire in 1902 and now established in parts of Chilterns; more occasionally seen elsewhere. Hibernates underground during winter months.
