Medium-sized bat with comparatively short ears. Frequently associated with water and seen flying low over lakes, ponds and canals just as dusk is falling. Also feeds along woodland rides. Chirps can be heard by those with good hearing. In summer, roosts, sometimes in colonies, in hollow trees and tunnel entrances. In winter, hibernates in caves, mines and cellars. Widespread and fairly common in Britain except the far N of Scotland and present in Ireland except the SW.
