Common Dolphin
Delphinus delphis
Length 1.8-2.5m
Despite name, now distinctly uncommon in British waters and rather difficult to see from land; seen regularly, however, from Strumble Head, Wales. Fortunately, it is often inclined to accompany boats, usually well away from land. Schools of 10 to 100 may be encountered and will often bow-ride with consummate ease for several minutes before dispersing
en masse with determined speed. Nowadays, ferry crossings from Britain to Ireland, mainland Scotland to the northern isles, and Cornwall to the Scilly Isles, offer the best chances of observation. Seen well and at close range, attractively marked with wavy stripes of yellow, grey or brown on its flanks; beak long and narrow. Being a fish-eater its demise in recent years must partly be attributed to over-fishing.
