Large, active species. Associated with ponds, lake and canals. Patrols regular patch of water when hunting but also seen hawking along woodland rides well away from water. Shows broad green stripes on thorax and abdomen with markings of similar coloration on abdomen except for last three segments of male where markings are blue. Widespread and generally common in S and C England. Scarce in Wales and absent from Scotland and Ireland. Flies from JuneOctober.
