Both sexes and all ages similar in size and colour to common darter. Male, however, is easily recognised by marked constriction towards front of abdomen. Locally common in S and E England and SE Ireland. Favours ponds, marshes and lakes. Frequently perches with wings depressed slightly. Flies July and August.
