Oval in outline with black and white markings on wings and abdomen. Larvae similarly pied but lack fully formed wings. Following hibernation, adults from the previous autumn emerge in May and are seen until July. Feeds on low-growing plants, particularly white dead-nettle and black horehound. Favours hedgerows and waysides. Widespread in England and Wales; absent from Scotland and Ireland.
