A striking dragonfly, easily recognised by its dark body marked with bright yellow rings on the abdomen. Favours clean, fast-flowing rivers and streams and squat nymphs live buried in silt and sediment at bottom. Fast-flying and active in sunny weather but on dull days often lethargic and can be watched at close range. Widespread in W of England, Wales and Scotland and often associated with uplands; also occurs locally further E on moors and heaths. Flies June-August.
