Often the commonest dragonfly in England and Wales; also occurs in Ireland but scarce in N England and absent from Scotland. Mature male has blood-red abdomen but in immature male and female this is orange-brown. Patrols regular territory over margins of ponds and lakes but also hunts along woodland rides. Frequently rests on ground but also uses perches. Flies June­late autumn; often the latest-flying species of dragonfly, not killed until first severe frosts.
