Male is sky blue with black bands along length of abdomen and black 'U' marking on segment two of abdomen; female is mostly black but with tip of abdomen blue. Favours marshes, canals and ponds and nymph lives in still water. Widespread and generally common in England and Ireland; local in Wales and very scarce in Scotland. Flies May-August and often found resting among waterside vegetation.
