Adults are seen in May and June, hence alternative name of 'may-bug'. Easily recognised by hairy, rufous-brown elytra and pointed-tipped abdomen. In many areas, common enough to form large swarms at dusk; these often fly around tree tops and consume large numbers of leaves. Larvae live in soil and spend several years feeding on roots of grasses, herbaceous plants and trees; sometimes occur at sufficient densities in lawns and cultivated land to cause visible damage.
